The Origin and Design

Introduced in the 1960s, the Rolex 6694 was part of the brand’s Oyster series, renowned for its waterproof cases. What sets the 6694 apart is its balance between luxury and practicality. It’s not as opulent as some of its counterparts in the Rolex collection, yet it carries an air of sophistication and simplicity that is hard to find in modern watches.

The watch features a stainless steel case, typically measuring 34mm, making it modestly sized by today’s standards but perfectly in line with the design aesthetics of its era. Its crystal is made of acrylic, a common material in vintage watches, known for its ability to withstand the test of time. The dial, often in shades of black or silver, is clean and uncluttered, with the date function at the 3 o’clock position being its most prominent feature.

The Rolex 6694Movement

At the heart of the Rolex 6694 is the manual wind movement, a distinction that purists and watch enthusiasts deeply appreciate. In an age where automatic movements are the norm, the manual caliber 1225 movement of the 6694 requires daily winding. This ritual connects the wearer to the watch in a way that automatic watches can’t replicate, making it not just an instrument of timekeeping but a daily companion that requires attention and care.

Durability and Precision

Rolex has always been synonymous with durability, and the 6694 is no exception. Its Oyster case provides excellent protection against water and dust, a feature that was quite revolutionary at the time of its release. The Precision in its name isn’t just for show. The watch is known for its accuracy, a testament to the craftsmanship and quality standards that Rolex adheres to.

Living with the Rolex 6694

The Rolex 6694 operates on a manual winding mechanism, which requires a daily winding ritual. I find this connects me more to the watch than a daily automatic. Manual watches need to be loved, and there is something special, and maybe lost, in winding the movement, and interacting with such a precision piece of engineering.

While living with a Rolex 6694 is mostly a delight, it’s important to consider the practical aspects. Being a vintage watch, it may require more frequent servicing to ensure its performance and longevity, and nothing says this more than an acrylic crystal. While durable, it is more prone to scratching than modern sapphire crystals, so be prepared to give it a polish. Again, this is a connection with the watch that I enjoy. A little lapping paste, and a soft cloth will remove most day-to-day scratches, but let’s face it, this isn’t a watch you will wear when you are doing the gardening. It needs a little more respect than that.

The Rolex 6694 in the photographs is available from our shop, and comes with an aftermarket leather strap, and aftermarket buckle featuring a Rolex Crown. The gentleman we sourced it from assured us it was recently serviced, which reflects in the condition of the movement, but unfortunately, he did not have the foresight to keep the paperwork

The Rolex 6694 Legacy

Today, the Rolex 6694 is considered a collector’s item, prized not just for its functionality but for its historical significance. It represents a period in watchmaking that was less about extravagance and more about precision, durability, and design. Owning a 6694 is like owning a piece of history, a nod to a time when watches were not just accessories but essential instruments of daily life.

For those looking to delve into the world of vintage Rolex watches, the 6694 is an excellent starting point. It’s more accessible than some of the brand’s more high-profile models, yet it doesn’t compromise on the quality and prestige that Rolex is known for.

In conclusion, the Rolex 6694, or the Oysterdate Precision, is more than just a timepiece. It’s a celebration of traditional watchmaking, a symbol of enduring elegance, and a testament to Rolex’s commitment to quality and precision. Whether you’re a seasoned collector or a novice in the world of vintage watches, the 6694 is a piece that deserves recognition and admiration.
